Welcome to publishing and presenting!

Tips for Writing Articles

(Wendy Belcher, UCLA)

The 5 keys to success as an academic writer, myths about publishing, and the 10 most common reasons for rejection.

Note: If you are interested in attending a workshop like this one, note that University Career Services, Graduate Career Services, and the Teaching Resource Center sponsor many each year: check their websites for more information. (See also Job Search on our site for more UCS resources.)

The Inside Scoop from an Editor

(Adam Winsler, George Mason)

Winsler, editor of the Early Childhood Research Quarterly, prepared this incredibly useful, information-packed presentation for a meeting of the UVa Risk & Prevention fellowship program. He describes the editorial process, gives detailed statistics on submissions, and offers tips for students.

How to Review Manuscripts

(Amy Luckner, Sonya Myers, & Claire Cameron Ponitz, University of Virginia)

There's no need to stay on the receiving end of peer review! In fact, you should begin reviewing during graduate school. (Note: the best way to start is asking your advisor for manuscripts they've received, but see the above notes from an editor on beginning your own direct involvement.) This presentation explains how to write a review. See also the presenters' handout, as well their suggested APA reference.

Graphic design: Edward Tufte

Tufte has published 4 books on the visual presentation of data, and periodically offers day-long courses in Washington and other cities. If you want to take your article and presentation graphics up a notch, this is a great place to start.
