Just the basics to get you started. See the Ref Works Help/Tutorial for more detail.

Adding References

  • To add a new reference manually, go to the top menu and click on “References” - “Add New Reference”, and type in as much info as you’d like. (You do not have to fill out all the fields.) In the field called “Notes,” you can write whatever thoughts/summaries/etc. you’d like.

  • Hopefully, you’ll be importing most references, rather than manually typing them :) From Psyc Info, just click the folder icon by each article (to put them in your Psyc Info folder), then click "Folder has items" to view the list. From there you can hit "Export" - Ref Works will come up as an option.

  • IMPORTANT: The references you import will be tagged in a folder called “Last Imported”. Go there immediately and move them into the folder you want (see below), because “Last Imported” is automatically cleared when the next import is done (they wouldn't be erased, they'd just become harder to find).

  • If you are having problems importing references - namely, only a blank page comes up - make sure your browser is not configured to block pop-up windows.

Folders

  • To create a new folder, go to the top menu and click on "Folders"-"Create New Folder". You can have a separate folder for each paper you're writing, each project you're researching, each person you'd want to share it with, etc.

  • To just look at a folder's contents, click on the “View” pull-down, select “Folder”, and then pick it from the list.

  • To “put” references into a specific folder, check the ones you want then click on “Put in folder…” , where you'll pick the folder. [Notice I say “put” in quotes, because actually the references don’t move anywhere – they’re just tagged to be called up by that folder. So, they always remain in the “All References” list, and can be tagged to as many folders as you’d like (for example, if they’re relevant to multiple projects).]

Viewing References

  • When you login, you'll be taken to the view page for “All References”. You can fiddle with the pulldown button “Switch to… Standard View” to see more or less detail on that screen.

  • To see the full entry for a given reference, click on the small, blue print “View” next to it.

  • To add notes or other information to an entry, click on the small, blue print “Edit” next to it.

  • To actually go to the original article (if it was imported and you’re on a UVA computer), select "Standard view" from the "Switch to" list at the top. A "Find at UVA" button will appear.
