CATTELL DISSERTATION AWARD

In a continuing effort to encourage and recognize high standards of

dissertation research, the Section of Psychology of the New York

Academy of Sciences announces the thirty-sixth annual competition for

the James Mc Keen Cattell Award for an outstanding doctoral

dissertation in psychology. The competition is limited to graduate

students of accredited doctoral programs who have either attained

degrees or successfully defended their dissertations between July 1,

2006 and June 30, 2007. Each department or program is invited to

nominate just one dissertation, submitted in the summary format

described below, no later than October 15, 2007. We hope for a

diverse representation of applicants in terms of both geographical

region and area of specialization.

The winner will be announced during April 2008 on the Academy website

and to its international membership, and will receive an Award

Certificate. The mentor and doctoral program in which the winning

dissertation was completed will also be awarded a Citation

Certificate. Dissertations will be judged by the Steering Committee

of the Section of Psychology, with the consultation of specialists in

the area.

A summary of the dissertation should be submitted without personal or

institutional identification according to these guidelines: 1200-1500

words of text, double-spaced format. A page or two consisting of

tables and figures plus some references and key words may be added.

Summaries will be assessed in terms of clarity of purpose and

rationale, method and research design, results, with statistics as

appropriate, and conclusions, with implications and/or applications.

On a separate sheet, include the contact information of both the

author and the faculty mentor for the dissertation. E-mail

submissions are preferred.

Following an anonymous review, the Steering Committee may request up

to three copies of the dissertation itself, for final review by

specialists. Please indicate the name of the person to be contacted

should the dissertation be requested. The summary should be sent to:

Dr. Jennifer Mangels
